AENY’s annual series returns to showcase the latest contemporary work from Spain. Highlighting rarely translated Spanish playwrights, the program exposes New York audiences, actors, and directors to these timely works and allows them to be a part of selecting one to fully produce the following season.

Emilio Williams is a playwright and stage director. He is widely regarded in Spain as one of the most promising new voices of the stage. In 2010, his alternative hit comedy “Tables and Beds” was selected among 80 plays from 12 countries as the winner of the IV Premio El Espectaculo Teatral. This year his comedy, “Smartphones- a Pocket Size Farce” received its world premiere at Trap Door Theater in Chicago, the city where he currently resides. His next world premiere “Your Problem with Men” is currently under-development at Teatro Luna, the all Latina theater assemble from Chicago.

Mar Gómez Glez, is a Spanish playwright and novelist. Her award-winning work has received global recognition, including the 2011 Calderon de la Barca Theatre Award, the 2008 Arte Joven Latina Award, and the 2007 Beckett Theatre Award. She is the author of the novel Cambio de sentido (2010, translated into English with the support of PEN American Center), the children’s book Acebedario (2006), and numerous other short stories and plays. Ms. Gomez Glez also authored Wearing Lorca’s Bowtie (AENY’s inaugural work which played Off-Broadway in December of 2011 at The Duke Theatre in NYC), and the site-specific piece 39 Defaults, which premiered at the Teatro Stage Fest in NYC in 2012. She is currently studying for a PhD, and is a Humanities Initiative Fellow at New York University.

Cristina Colmena, born in Seville, is the author of the short story collection La amabilidad de los extranos (Kindness of Strangers), and several of her short stories have appeared in a variety of literary magazines. With a B.A. in Audiovisual Communication and Journalism, she has worked as a producer and screenwriter for television and in cultural management. Having earned her M.F.A in Creative Writing from NYU, she writes fiction, theatre, and scripts for both cinema and television. She also collaborates on articles for different magazines, and on film reviews for www.criticalia.com.

Alfredo Sanzol is a Spanish playwright and stage director born in Madrid. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RESAD), and thereafter founded his own theatre company, Producciones Callao, where he writes and directs. Favorite credits include Risas y Destruccion, Si, pero no lo Soy, Dias Estupendos (Max Award for Best Playwright), and En la Luna (Ceres Award for Best Playwright). He has worked for the National Theatre (CDN), Teatro Abadia, Valencia’s Performing Arts Festival, and Madrid public television, writing scripts for the popular sitcom “Living Lavapies”. Other directorial credits include texts from Steven Berkoff, Oscar Wilde, and Valle Inclan, among others.

Guillem Clua His first play, The Invisible, won the prestigious Ciutat d’Alcoi Theatre Award in 2002. That year, Clua wrote the stage adaptation of Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice. His next play, Skin in Flames obtained yet another Ciutat d’Alcoi Award, and also earned the Barcelona Critics’ Choice Award for Best Play of 2005. Since then, it has premiered in more than 10 countries. Clua also has written Taste of Ashes (2006), Marburg (2010), the musical Killer (2011), The Promised Land (2011), Invasion (2012) and Smiley (2012). Many of his plays have been translated into English.
